RICHARD EVANS - POLITICIAN

This page offers a behind-the-scenes look at my life in politics—from entering Parliament with idealism and determination, to navigating its sharp corners and murky corridors. It’s a journey marked by hard-won victories, fierce debates, shifting loyalties, and the relentless push-and-pull between principle and power.

Here, you’ll find links to pivotal speeches, media interviews, opinion pieces, and moments that defined my time in public life—some celebrated, others controversial, but all real. You’ll also see how these lived experiences now shape the political thrillers I write: fiction that draws directly from the machinery of government, the quiet deals behind closed doors, and the human stories that rarely make the headlines. This is where politics and prose collide.

MY POLITICAL LIFE

My writing draws deeply from the political landscape I once inhabited—where legislation, loyalty, and ambition collided daily. Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of meeting and working with an extraordinary range of people: from Presidents and Prime Ministers to activists, industry leaders, and everyday Australians trying to be heard.

Serving in the national Parliament was both an honour and an education. It exposed me to the best and worst of public life—moments of genuine progress and episodes of staggering self-interest. Along the way, I stumbled, learned, and occasionally triumphed. But above all, I witnessed firsthand the decisions, deals, and dynamics that shape our nation.

Those experiences now inform my fiction—stories grounded in political reality, sharpened by personal insight, and driven by the complex, often conflicted characters I once stood beside.

A BRIEF JOURNEY THROUGH MY POLITICAL CAREER

ZERO INTEREST

A carefree lothario with a loose tie and looser opinions, I spent my youth blissfully unaware of politics—until life, responsibility, and too many pub arguments caught up with me.

PRESELECTION

In my thirties, frustration turned into action. I stopped complaining and sought preselection—successfully. That’s when I met politics’ real players: the ruthless, the powerful, and the truly horrible people.

POLITICAL LIFE

Elected to Parliament, I learned fast. Between policy, power plays, and late-night sittings, I saw behind the curtain—and made enough enemies to know I was doing something right.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

I took my hard-won political instincts into the corporate world—where negotiation, strategy, and reading the room paid dividends. It wasn’t Parliament, but the egos were just as large.

POLITICAL STORIES

Now I write what I lived—political thrillers that peel back the facade. My novels are fiction, mostly. The settings are imagined, mostly. But the characters? They’re exactly as awful as you think.

WHAT YOU WILL FIND ON THIS PAGE

FROM PARLIAMENT TO THE PAGE:

Before I became an author of political thrillers, I spent years inside the very system I now write about. Elected to Parliament after a stint in corporate life, I served during some of the most turbulent years in recent political memory. I saw the machinery from within—its strategy, its power plays, and its most horrible people. These experiences shaped my novels in ways no imagination alone ever could.

SPEECHES THAT STILL RESONATE:

Whether it was on national security, Indigenous rights, or corruption, I believed in using Parliament to speak plainly and boldly. Some speeches ruffled feathers. Others found their way into headlines—and into the heart of my fiction.

POLITICAL OPINING:

Ever had the urge to share your thoughts on the peculiar twists of politics? I certainly do! Here, I voice my views on the strange and bewildering happenings in the world of politics.

REELS & REFLECTIONS:

Behind the scenes: I’ve started filming short reels reflecting on the moments that shaped me—from heated cabinet meetings to late-night caucus coups. These aren’t soundbites. They’re the bones behind the books.

POLITICS TO PROSE:

What Made It Into My Novels.

Every novel I write starts with a simple question: What if this got worse? Many of the characters, dilemmas, and moral tightropes in my fiction trace directly back to people I knew—and decisions I had to make.

LEGACY, LEAKS & LESSONS:

Politics taught me how the system works—and how it breaks. I keep these records here not to defend the past, but to show you what shaped the fiction I write now.
